What you need to colour like a pro:
– Your chosen pot of hair colour
– A tint brush and mixing bowl
– A mirror (or mirrors)
– A salon cape, towels, newspaper – basically anything that will prevent hair colour getting on your clothes or carpet
– Protective gloves
– Petroleum jelly
– A pH-balanced, colour-friendly shampoo and conditioner
– Hair clips or bands to separate your hair
– A disposable shower cap
– A clock, stopwatch or phone – anything that can keep the time for you

TOP TIP: If you’re making a major colour change (e.g. from black to platinum blonde), this is often best carried out by a professional colourist, who knows how to move from one tone to another while minimising damage to the hair.

Step 1 – Wash your hair
Make sure to wash your hair with a pH-balanced pre-colour shampoo before colouring, to leave it in the best condition to take on your chosen shade. Leave the hair towel-dried so that it remains damp.
Avoid using conditioner before application – conditioner removes natural oils that help the colour bind to the hair more effectively.

Step 2 – Protect yourself and your surroundings
Now it’s time to protect yourself, your clothes, carpets and belongings. While the long-lasting nature of the colour is ideal for hair, it can be difficult to remove from surfaces.
Wear old clothing and cover yourself with a hairdresser’s cape, towel or bathrobe. Place old towels, newspaper or similar materials on the floor to catch any spills. Put on disposable gloves to prevent staining your hands.

Step 3 – Follow the instructions
Before starting, always read the instructions provided with your chosen hair colour, even if you have used Directions before.

Step 4 – Perform a strand test
Apply the colour to a small, discreet section of hair to check the final result. This will help determine whether a longer or shorter processing time is needed to achieve the desired shade.

Step 5 – Separate your hair
Divide damp hair into at least four sections using hair clips or bands. This ensures full and even coverage and helps prevent missed areas.
There are few things more frustrating than finishing the colouring process only to discover untouched sections of hair.

Step 6 – Apply the colour
Using a tint brush, apply the colour section by section, working in sections of approximately 0.5–1.5 cm at a time for complete coverage.
Begin at the roots, as this area requires the most processing time. Spread the colour evenly through the lengths, ensuring no strands are missed.
Always use a brush rather than applying directly from the tub to achieve even distribution.

Step 7 – Allow the colour to develop
Leave the colour to process according to your strand test results. Directions hair colour typically requires between 15 and 30 minutes.

Step 8 – Rinse thoroughly
Rinse the hair thoroughly with warm water. It is recommended to rinse away from the face and body to avoid staining the skin.

Step 9 – Dry and style
Style the hair as desired. Please note that heat styling may affect the longevity of Directions hair colour.
